Beyond Boarding Up Windows Before the Storm—Check Your Policy, Too

June blog image

When a storm is coming, it’s important to go through a checklist to ensure your property will be as safe as possible. The same checklist is important for insurance—but it should happen before the storm is even visible on the radar. Here are some tips to stay a step ahead:

  1. Talk about Storms with Your Agent Early and Often

Don’t wait for news alerts to send you scrambling. Call your agent early in the year. Ask them to explain your coverage in plain language and check for gaps, especially around wind, flood, and storm-specific deductibles.

  1. Make Sure You’re Receiving All Agent Communications

Yes, you can get texts from your agent or messages on social media. Most likely, your agent is reaching out to you in multiple ways, especially right before a storm. These may be texts, emails, phone calls, and even good old-fashioned printed cards with emergency numbers. If they aren’t, ask for it. In a blackout, multiple lines of communication matter.

  1. Prep Now, Claims Will Run More Smoothly Later

Look for and organize critical receipts, photos, and an emergency contact list. These aren’t just for your peace of mind—they make claims faster and less painful. A quick checklist from your agent today can save weeks of frustration tomorrow.

  1. Ask About Local Risk

A good insurance agent knows if your home is sitting in a floodplain or a high-wind corridor. Great ones share that info with you before a storm and help you plan accordingly.

  1. The Follow-Through Test

Here’s a litmus test: does your agent check in after the storm? Real support isn’t just a payout—it’s someone who helps you navigate deadlines, limits, and next steps when the world is upside down.

The Bottom Line: When the hurricane shutters go up or you have to evacuate, your policy shouldn’t feel like a mystery novel. Make sure your agent is as much a part of your storm kit as bottled water and batteries.
